Mike Salazar
1943 ~ 2008

Michael Henry Salazar, born January 7, 1943 in Wheatland, Wyoming, the seventh child of Margarito "Mike" and Maria Vialpando Salazar, passed away in his home Monday evening, Nov. 10, 2008, with his loving wife at his side.Mike married Linda Sue Bailey in 1965, later divorced. He married Kristi Ohrn, on March 9, 1985. Mike lived his life his way. He loved to laugh, never neglected his responsibilities and never ran from a fight. His passions included old cars, model cars and trains and collecting firefighting memorabilia. His greatest honor was serving his community as a firefighter, initially in Nashville, TN, and later with the Salt Lake City Fire Department, where he completed his 30 years and retired in 2004. Through his tenure, he served as a combat firefighter, a Hazardous Materials Technician and Fire Inspector. He spent countless hours volunteering with the auxiliary and spearheaded the project to build the monument of the fallen firefighters which stands today in front of the Salt Lake Fire Department Headquarters building at 2nd South and 5th East. Mike pushed his playfulness to the point that he became known as the "Brown Devil" with his fellow firefighters. He tended to respect most people's views, but would challenge them playfully, especially when it came to Notre Dame Football. He was just happy to know that Notre Dame never played Wyoming, his other favorite. Mike served in the United States Army in the early 1960's, where he was stationed in France and received his Honorable Discharge. He later served in the Utah National Guard. Mike is survived by his wife, Kristi; his children: James Michael Salazar, Teresa Michelle (Terry) Moser and Renee Margarita (Dana) Seely, Julie (Bill) LeMieux, Tracey Jones, Wendy (Mark) Andreason and Jon Farr, 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: George (Joyce) Salazar, Irene (Brad) Davis , Fred "Paco" (Stella) Salazar, June (Lee) Cline, Dale "Chuck" (Anna) Salazar. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters: Daniel Salazar, Virginia Gonzales, Sally John and Beatrice Kentner and Josephine Salazar. He will be deeply missed by his Chihuahua "Kiki". The family would like to thank Harmony Hospice and Dr. Teresa Gourde for the loving care they provided. Funeral services for Mike will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 10600 South 1950 East at 2 p.m., where family and friends are invited to call from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to the services. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to be made to the Primary Children's Medical Center in Mike's name. Please send condolences to the family at www.larkinmortuary.com
